Sloppy or Painterly?

Colorful painterly abstract painting by Oscar Will
I created this painting with a colorful contrasting underpainting so that the top layer would jump out and have more interest to it. Is my technique producing the result I wanted? Does it look sloppy instead of painterly? Should the top layer be applied in a neat pattern to let the bottom shine through?

  1. I thinks the delineated shapes and the application of the paint seem to run counter to one another, but you’ve got to try these things out

    1. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate the input, and am going through my paintings to finish them in one style or another.
