Painting Downtown Los Angeles

view west down Grand Avenue in Los Angeles

4/11/2026 – Since the rain scheduled this weekend moved to tomorrow, it turned out to be a great day to do some plein air painting. I parked near Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles and headed down Grand Avenue. The sidewalk is very wide there and the view of the skyscrapers disappearing into the horizon make this a great spot to paint. There was a lot of foot traffic going to the museums and other sights. People stopped to check out my painting and take photos. I think it is rare for people to see plein air painters in downtown. I am used to people watching me paint. This time, I remembered to give out my business cards to people who were curious.

The style is impressionism. I sketched out the painting with black paint and then loosely painted in the rest. The palette for this painting included cool colors. Any other colors were mixed with blue, this is so that all the colors harmonize. This painting will also hang in rooms with cool interiors. Thank you for reading my post.
